Don’t be afraid of that wizened hand; it belonged to an extraordinary woman, artist and muse, Beatrice Wood, who was the original Bohemian.
Wood ran away to Paris at 19 to paint, act and study art; she met all the renowned artists of the time including Man Ray; she had a passionate affair with Marcel Duchamp who brought her into the Dada circle; she became a respected artist in her own right.
Her life was so remarkable, she was partly the inspiration for Rose, the lead character in James Cameron’s Titanic. Wood lived to 105, wearing saris and silver jewelry to the end. Photo from Mirabella, April 1993.
